The new Google Play is absolutely a wonderful innovation. It is a one stop for all your app needs and surely raises a competition for Apple’s App Store. With the latest rebranding of the Android Market, there is a lot of stress on the comprehensive nature of the stores. The hope is that a whole range of users, who were previously associated the Android Market with free apps, will be drawn to download a film or, in certain markets, upload their own content so that the whole thing becomes a comprehensive, web-based service for content.
Google wants to emphasize that a Play account allows users to access all their content, of which Android apps are just a small part. And it’s the website rather than the app that is the more changed part.
Besides a new icon, with a shopping bag, the original Market app is basically the same. Its emphasis, in fact, is as much as it ever was on the mixture of books, movies and apps. But the uncomfortable thing is that this app still lacks the clarity of the Iphone’s app store.
The online service of Google Play is also accessible at play.google.com. Looking at the Web site for first time creates an impression that it is the Android Market with a redesigned look.
There are three newly added sections in Google Play – Movies, Music and e-book. Google Play can store up to 20,000 music songs online. One can also pay to get more storage.
In the Movies section, Google is offering thousands of popular movies available on rent. Anyone with a Google Account can login and start purchasing at Google Play. This cloud-based service stores everything on Google servers. So user library is accessible from any android device and even from your PC.
