The latest development in the app world centers around the completion of Google Sky Map. Google has revealed that the work on the app has been completed. This is really good news, right?

In addition, they reminded that there will be no more important official releases of the Google Sky Map in future. Since the major development on the app is finished, the company has decided to open source it. They have released the Sky Map’s open-source code for developers who are interested.

Sky Map which was launched back in 2009 was developed by six employees working sponsored spare time in Google’sPittsburghoffice. The Android app was one of the Google’s famed projects.

It is designed to work in combination with the overlaid basic astronomical data and smartphone camera. By simply pointing the phone’s camera towards the sky, the app traces and identifies the constellations, planets and other heavenly bodies easily.

Along with open sourcing, the company has informed that they are having collaborations with the Carnegie Melon University. The students in the university can contribute to the direct development of Sky Map through their series of projects. For those who are interested, the open-source code of the app is available here.
