Google Pulls Back Support for Native Gmail App for BlackBerry
Google is cutting their string of support for BlackBerry. The search giant is axing out their Gmail as a native app for Research In Motion’s BlackBerry devices starting from November 22.
If you are a user of the app, don’t be alarmed, because Google has said that current users will still be able to use the app after the date. But after 22nd, you wouldn’t be able to download it or use it if you are a new user.
The company explained that their decision in pulling support off the app is because they are going to go all out on delivering a much better Gmail service for a mobile browser. The recent BlackBerry 6 and 7 phones will be getting a better feel via their latest WebKit browsers.
This decision of Google follows the company’s launch and concurrent slashing of their native Gmail app for iOS. The app for iPhones has come under the radar and many criticized it for being a web wrapper for the most part.
But the reeling in of support from BlackBerry devices after the entry of iOS app shows that Google has shifted their focus primarily because of RIM’s sinking platform, whereas the iPhone is on the rise.
