The app keeps track of where you have been and places near you destination that you have never been. Then the app will lead you to your destination via the places you have never visited before.

The idea to create such an app came to Tom Loois when he was asked to ‘design his personal definition of silence’ in his final year at the Design Academy of Eindhoven. Initially he had no idea what to do. He was wandering through Eindhoven one day and found small alley he had never used. It was a eureka moment for him. “I found my silence in the places I’d never been,” he says.

When he started thinking about it he found that there were plenty of blank spots in his mental map. Then he designed a special route planner. He decided to revisit Eindhoven with the help of a bicycle and Google Streetview. Loois was fascinated by the idea of putting a three-dimensional understanding onto a map by translating from one medium to another.

His final project is the BlankWays smartphone app. BlankWays, which charts your progress through the city, noting which paths you’ve come down before and suggesting itineraries to  cover new ground. The app indicates and measures which parts of the city you’ve traveled, and which you haven’t.
